The Auction property, 14 Queen Street, Portsea reveals a snapshot into days gone by when Portsmouth was a bustling Port with its population reliant on employment from the Dockyard and the Royal Navy. In the 18th and 19th century Tailor Shops were prevalent in Old Portsmouth and Portsea, providing Naval officers with various outfitting and tailor services.
Did you know that the famous Savile Row Tailors, ‘Gieves & Hawkes’ have links to Portsmouth? James Gieve did his apprenticeship with a Royal Navy appointed Tailor in Portsmouth High Street in 1835.
