Moving House

You have found the property that you want to buy and dates have been agreed for the exchange of contracts (which is when a legally binding contract comes into force) At this point you should make enquires for price quotes and availability with two or three removal companies to give you enough time to compare quotes and the services they offer, most removal companies offer a different range of service which can be a full packing service- where the removal teams pack everything - to a fragile pack where they only pack fragile items. There is a national Guild of Removers and Storers and they strongly recommend you choose a firm that is registered with the Removals Industry Ombudsman Scheme. Companies registered with the scheme are subject to inspection and must conform to certain standards. Be realistic about the quantity of furniture you have when getting a quote as this will decide the size of the van required and number of staff required on the day.

When the exchange of contracts has taken place you will now have a completion date (moving date) you should then confirm your booking with the removals firm or organise van hire if you are conducting the move yourself. Finally, as removal vans are usually very large it might be wise to warn your neighbours.

Useful Tips

  • Make a list 4 to 6 weeks before your move of those who need to know of a change of address. Such as, doctor, dentist, credit card companies, bank, T.V Licensing, Driving License, Insurance companies, Inland Revenue and local council.
  • Contact your utility companies one week before so you can give up-to-date meter readings on the move day.
  • Arrange to have mail re-directed. The post office will make a charge for this.
  • A week before cancel all deliveries such as newspapers, milk etc.
  • Arrange your final telephone bill and your connection date for your new home.
  • Arrange for Washing machines, fridges and freezers and Gas cookers to be disconnected if you are taking them with you.
  • Place bed linen to the top of a packing case so that you can make up beds easily.
  • Think about child care on the day and also any pets could family or friends help look after them while you move?
